Panamanian night monkey in the Darien gap, Panama. These cute suckers live communally in tree holes and take turns to keep watch for predators in the day. Unlike any other monkeys outside their group, they are mostly nocturnal. So little is known about them that population trends are unknown. However, their range is heavily threatened by deforestation and hunting, and they are likely in danger of extinction.
‘Aroma’, Manilla. An ironic name unless the word ‘aroma’ conjures connotations of decaying garbage, dust, sweat and piss. This was supposed to be a temporary housing estate in the 90’s, but after decades of neglect and broken promises, aroma is decidedly still here, and thousands of families are crammed into an area wedged next to the port of manilla. It’s also a dump site. Mention the name to many people and the first words to come out are ‘drugs’, ‘scavengers’, ‘criminals’. What many people miss is that there are tens of thousands of people here, all with their own stories and individual lives and all trying to survive, having been left behind by a city that has moved on.
Not the typical project I’m used to working on. I’m currently in Tondo, Philippines, also known as the dump site of manilla. Literally hundreds of tonnes of trash are dumped in this district daily where local people scrape a living by scavenging recyclable materials to sell and food to eat. I’m currently working with the @purplecommunityfund training and equipping young people, mostly girls, from this community how to shoot films and document life around them with the hope that this will eventually lead to a career or internships, or just an artistic outlet to represent themselves and their world around them with.
